Duties : respect parents · respect the law · respect institutions · respect school rules · pay taxes · obey authorities.
Students' duties : go to school, work hard, not disobey teachers, not break school rules, not destroy properties, not urinate in the school yard.
II. Expressing duties
It's my duty to respect the laws of my country.
I have the duty to obey my parents. → He has the duty to respect the law.
3 structures : It's my/your/his + duty + to + BV · sujet + have/has the duty to + BV
III. Absence of necessity — don't have to
I don't have to obey my friends. (= it is not necessary)
She doesn't have to do your washing-up.
It's not my duty to break the school rules.
don't/doesn't have to = pas obligé de (ce n'est pas nécessaire). ⚠️ Différent de mustn't (interdit) !
⚠️ Pièges classiques :- don't have to ≠ mustn't : « pas nécessaire » ≠ « interdit ».
- 3ᵉ personne : has the duty to / doesn't have to.
- It's not my duty to… = aussi absence de devoir.
