I. Vocabulary — The city
a bridge (pont) · an airport (où les avions décollent/atterrissent) · highways (autoroutes) · a stadium · a street (rue) · running water (eau courante du robinet) · a university · traffic lights (feux de circulation)
II. Expressing wishes — wish + past tense
I wish I lived in Abidjan. (= je voudrais vivre à Abidjan)
I wish I was/were in a palace.
Abou wishes he lived in London.
Règle : wish + sujet + prétérit exprime un souhait irréel au présent (la réalité est contraire : je ne vis pas à Abidjan).
III. Past vs present — there used to be
In the past, Abidjan used to be a small village, but today it is a big town.
In the past, there used to be no traffic lights in Abidjan, but today there are many.
used to be / there used to be = état passé révolu ; there is/are = situation actuelle. Idéal pour comparer une ville avant et aujourd'hui.
⚠️ Pièges classiques :- Après wish → prétérit : I wish I lived (pas « wish I live »).
- I wish I were est la forme classique (état irréel).
- there used to be + nom = il y avait ; ne pas confondre avec used to + verbe.
