can = capacité (modal invariable, suivi de la base verbale) ; be able to = équivalent avec l'auxiliaire be qui se conjugue (is/are able to).
III. Reporting someone's speech — direct → indirect

Règles du discours rapporté : verbe introducteur au passé (said) → recul d'un temps : can→could · present→past · am/is→was · will→would ; adaptation des pronoms (I→he/she).
⚠️ Pièges classiques :- Après said au passé : toujours le recul d'un temps (can→could).
- be able to : accorder be avec le sujet (is/are able to, not able to).
- Ne pas oublier that (optionnel mais conseillé) dans le discours indirect.
